Brandon Ryan interviews Joey
I had a chance to sit down with Joey from the band “Though She Wrote” to discuss faith, homelessness, the economy and what the bands’ dreams are. Here is how it unfolded…
Enoch Magazine ) I hope your well man… My first question is a very ordinary one, but I just wanna get it out of the way. Where does the name of the band come from?
Joey ) Well, us as a band look at our music more than just music, its a ministry. And sense we all are teens and still in high school, we see what the normal teen goes through and struggles through every day. (even ourselves) ….and what do alot of teens do when they have problems?….they write down their feelings, and there hard times (in a journal or something of that nature)…. and all our lyrics to our songs are about the struggles in life, but yet they tell how God can get us through those times.
So even THOUGH she/he writes down their hard times, there is always an answer to the problem and that’s JESUS CHRIST!
Hopefully that’s clear.
Enoch Magazine ) Very interesting, some bands these days have no meaning or theme behind what they call their band. So it’s good to see that there’s some depth in Though She Wrote. Um, in your previous answer you said that you and members of the band have their own struggles. Would you mind expanding on those?
Joey ) I mean, everyone has there share of up’s and down’s. Nothing super huge has happened with anyone in this band, it’s just stuff that each member goes through, typical things. With us as a band we like to help each other as well and just be there for each other.
Enoch Magazine ) I heard that the band has encountered a lot of kids that struggle with suicide and different addictions. How does any member of the band typically respond to something like that?
Joey ) Well…most of the time when people start talking to us about that, they are reaching out for help. So we do the best that we can to help them! We’ve prayed with people and we’ve helped a few people stop drinking. We just talk with them about whatever they want and how God can help them with anything that they go through.
Enoch Magazine ) Very cool. Do you meet a lot of kids who seem wounded or hurt by the Church?
Joey ) eh…not too much but at times we’ve heard stories and such of how the church has the complete WRONG idea alot of the time! Like…we did a 3 day tour in West Virginia for the Poor with Brandt Russo. He explained a lot about how the church won’t even let homeless people into the church and stuff and its completely horrible cause that’s the opposite of what God wants.
Enoch Magazine ): And how does the band feel about homelessness?
Joey ) I mean, we all want to be able to help out more and stuff, we did the tour cause it really bugs us. I’m not gonna lie…doing that 3 day free tour for the homeless was one of the best experiences of my life. I wanna be able to help more so, yeah…I think what bugs us the most about it is how a lot of “churches” and “Christians” ignore it and treat them bad when they need help.
Enoch Magazine ) How has the economy effected the band?
Joey ) eh…it just sucks cause it costs so much for gas to get to show to show but it hasn’t effected us too huge yet.
Enoch Magazine ) In many Christian circles there seems to be the debate, whether Jesus died for the sins of all humanity, -OR- God’s elect people. What are your thoughts on this?
Joey ) We think he died for everyone… He was put on the earth to forgive everyone’s sins. Anyone can come into forgiveness, not just a select few and that’s what we try to do as a band- not to turn anyone away. Except everyone! No matter what! Follow in His footsteps.
Enoch Magazine ) We at Enoch Magazine tend to believe the same thing… If Though She Wrote could play a show with one of its favorite bands. Who would it be with and why?
Joey ) It would most definitely be with Underoath. They’ve been a huge part of influencing this band and they seem like really cool, real, christian guys. That would just be an amazing show to play along side of them!
Enoch Magazine ) Well cool man, it was great talking with you. Any last words you’d like to add?
Joey ) Check out www.purevolume.com/thoughshewrote and myspace.com/thoughshewrote
thanks a lot man!
